Steamboat @ O.K. Tuck, Brinchang, Cameron Highlands

With the daily temperature of 14° (min) to 22° (max), Steamboat became a popular thing here in Cameron Highlands. Knowing that the Chinese loves having something warm (a hot soup perhaps) ….therefore you can see many restaurants here serves steamboat. Steamboat on a chilly evening? Since there are so many of them, so which restaurant should I go?? To play safe, I asked my friend Wanyi who went there twice this year… ^^ I told her I want a nice steamboat and without ‘cut throat’ price. Apparently Wanyi suggested O.K. Tuck.

We were quite early. It was about 6+pm. I felt that it was a good time too…as the place was still quite vacant. The crowd grew when it was 7+pm. At O.K. Tuck, you’ll have the choice to either order the Chinese Style stir-fry dishes or Steamboat (which we were aiming for). Since we were there for the steamboat, therefore I didn’t bother to read the menu. =p

We have 5 diners. Each diner is priced at RM15 for the steamboat (its not buffet). I would say the price is reasonable. Well..I’ll leave it to you guys to judge the food based on the photos below. Apart from that, you may choose your choice of soup base. Choice of Herbal Soup, Chicken Soup, Tom Yam. Choose either one or you can opt for “yin yong” (2 types of soup). As an Asian…of cos I would like to have ‘Tom Yam”. Therefore we went for “yin yong”.

This restaurant is pretty visible because it has a huge signboard. Located opposite KFC.

1 person is entitle to 1 egg. Rice Vermicelli for steamboat. A pot of tea is price at RM3.

These are all the ingredients served.

Chicken Fillets & Fish Fillets.

Bean curd & Cuttlefish.

Fresh Mushrooms.

Jellyfish & Fried bean curd (Fu Chuk)

Prawns & Fish ball.

Check out the GREENS! So many types of fresh vegetables were served ♥♥♥

Put in the ingredients and boil them. I preferred Tom Yam soup over Chicken Soup. Chicken Soup was quite bland.

Yeahhh….ready to eat! The piping hot soup along with fresh ingredients….the feeling was so great. The satisfaction!!

Tea Break @ BOH Tea Centre, Sg. Palas Cameron Highlands

I struggled walked relaxingly up the hill and steps through bush walk for 200m. Apart from the magnificent and spectacular view, there’s this half overhung platform cafe sitting proudly on top hill. Barely any bricks…don’t get it wrong..I meant its built with metal frames with much huge windows (they are strong..no worries). Guess..the tourists never fail to pay a visit here.

The weather was fine..though it drizzles a little.

Look at it? Its an eye-catcher right? This is the platform cafe that I’m referring.

No outside food – Checked! No smoking – Checked! No Pets – Checked!

The interior. This was the crowd on a regular off peak weekend. So, you may expect the number of visitors during peak season right? The overhung area is on far end, which is the most ‘laku’ place. Seats are usually occupied. Unless you got the patience to wait lo…

Self service here. Queue to place your order. Besides the popular Boh Tea, there are also Cakes, Tarts & Pie for sale.

Cameronian Gold Blend – RM3.30 (recommended)

Tea from teabag..yet taste nice when you are sipping it in a different environment. Imagine if the same drink but you are having it in a lousy room..I doubt it would taste that good ler…Besides that, the tea are available for sale. Grab your purchases, varieties of tea packed in box. Bear in mind..the price is not much difference compared to supermarkets.

Scone – RM8 (recommended)

Scones are served with Strawberry Jam & Fresh Cream. The scone was quite good. Freshly bake and its not too dry.

Strawberry Tart – RM3.50

Tart filled with Strawberry Jam… Bad Tart!! The sweetness kills my tooth.  The pastry was flaky and not buttery. Both pastry & jam were too sweet for my liking…*sigh.

Strawberry Cake – RM6

Everything is about Strawberry in Cameron. Unfortunately this cake is below average. Texture of cake is quite dry. Guess…you be able to judge through the photo right?

Butter Lemon Cake – RM3.80

The not so lemony yet not so buttery cake was below average too.But still better than the Strawberry Cake above

What to you expect to view from this cafe? A beautiful panoramic view of Boh Tea plantation.

Places I Visited at Cameron Highlands – Part 2 (EQ Strawberry Farm, Boh Tea Center)

After the vegetable market, we continued our journey…within the short distance by road, we made another stop at a Strawberry farm which is located just beside Equatorial Hotel. Guess, strawberry farm is a MUST VISIT place in Cameron. – since its grown widely here, due to the weather. Takkan keep eating and buying strawberries..but never know how its grown & how it looks right??

Knowing that time is precious, (as we do not want to reach KL too late) I must say that we did not waste a lot of time on every destination. Each stop were within 1/2 to 1 hour.

4) EQ Strawberry Farm

There are so many Strawberry Farm here. Somehow we just choose  randomly. A friend of mine suggested ‘Big Red Strawberry Farm’. Unfortunately I missed that place. Since EQ Strawberry Farm is just a short distance from vegetable farm, therefore we went for it. Its Free Entry here. At  EQ Strawberry Farm, you may experience self pluck strawberry. Price is determined by the weight of strawberries you plucked. If I’m not mistaken its RM20/kg. Nahh….we did not go for that..just plain visit.

It’s pretty visible along the road.

Other than self pluck strawberry…there are also souvenirs and light snacks sold here. (ice cream, strawberry dip inn chocolate).

Hmm…looks like Strawberries are planted on pots.

strolling at the fenced up farm. It’s fenced, so that people won’t curi the strawberries…. ^^ Moreover the place looks quite neat too.

The ripe and the non-ripe strawberry.

5) Boh Tea Center (open daily 9am-4.30pm closed on Mondays)

There are several tea plantations/ farm in Cameron Highlands. My friend recommended Boh Tea Center located at Sg. Palas. Not just that, she also warned me about the narrow & winding road (which fits only 1 car at certain part) all the way up hill. Ohh My…I’m so worried and terrified.  Keeping myself alert all the way up..constantly reminding Alex to move drive slow slow….careful on the sharp bend…

Saw these colorful houses when we were about to reach the designated place.

pheww…reached here safely… walking on the trails to the top for a nice view!

Well, I can see a nice and rather unique building on top hill.

I’m at midway…Don’t worry. It’s not a tough climb anyway…

still climbing for a scenic panorama view

yeah….I’m up here now! Look at the magnificent view…really worth it.

Boh is the largest tea plantation in Cameron Highlands.

The largest producer of tea in Malaysia, Boh was established by JA Russell, an English businessman in the very early nineties. Noting the mineral-rich soil, high rainfall and cooling climate of Cameron Highlands, Russell saw the potential for growing tea – high in demand at that time despite an economic depression. He purchased a tract of land in Habu and set out to produce a robust tea with a distinct flavour, straight from the ground up. Since then, Boh has expanded into a corporate franchise sponsoring nature conservation efforts, producing intense media campaigns, and marketing its products sold across Southeast Asia.

View downhill..foot trail , blue houses & also a school for the villagers here. The villagers are usually the people who works at the tea plantation.

At Boh Tea Center, you can learn about Boh’s operating history, shop for its products, dine at its cafe and view its factory. By the way…the boxes of tea sold here ain’t alot cheaper than supermarket lor…

After we had our tea break at the scenic cafe, we walked downhill by the premix road. Here, you can shoot at different angle.

OK…ending my post with a photo of Me & Alex. ^^

Will write about the Cafe at Boh Tea Center on my next post. Stay tune….

Places I Visited at Cameron Highlands – Part 1 (Brinchang Night Market, Cactus Point, Vegetable Market)

Since we arrived Cameron quite late, therefore we did not have much time to visit any plantations. On first day, after a satisfying steamboat dinner we went to Brinchang Night Market. It was a wet evening. Luckily the rain stopped just on time for us to have a brisk walk at the night market.

1) Brinchang Night Market

Brinchang is a town located in Cameron Highlands in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. It is the second tourist town in Pahang after Tanah Rata. One of its attractions is the night market available during Friday, Saturday night and everyday on Malaysian school holidays. Brinchang night market offers a wide variety of products. Apart from vegetables, fruits, flowers, souvenirs and clothes, the main attraction here is their great variety of local street foods. Other than the representative Cameron food like fresh strawberry stick with honey/chocolate cream, steamed sweet potato or sweet corn, fried sweet potato ball, fried fresh mushroom or vegetables, the night market also serves a lot of common foods like pancake, roasted chicken, fried chicken, ice-cream, cake, fried meat ball, Murtabab, Kebab and others.

Getting a car park may be quite hectic here…I would suggest you to pay RM2 to park opposite Hill Garden Lodge Apartment/ Guardian Pharmacy or opposite the police station.

Blogs to refer :-

Strawberries at night market is so cheap..3 boxes for RM20. Its big and juicy. Mixed of sweet and sourish. Not forgetting ‘ais krim potong’ filled with strawberry extract is just RM1.

2) Cactus Point

The following day, after checking out from Strawberry Park Resort, we decided to traveled towards Simpang Pulai exit. The route back to KL. Our first stop was at Cactus Point. You can make any stops along the main road…because most of the tourist attraction (places to visit) are located along the main road.

Free Entry at Cactus Point

How well do you know about cactus? Or probably have you seen cactus before (the younger generations) Here, you can see varieties of cactus. There were so unique ones, ugly ones, beautiful ones, different ages… You can also purchase the cactus with an affordable price.

Different sizes and shapes…

How about some colorful and odd shapes?

Red vs Yellow?

Waahhh….cactus too has so nice flowers?

Not just cactus can be found here…you can also get flowers and plants. What do you think about the pricing? Not bad huh… My mom bought some potted plants back home too…

Do you like Gerbera Daisy?? I like it! I personally feel that Gerbera Daisy gives me the fresh and girlish feeling. ♥♥♥♥

3) Vegetable Market

Better known as the ‘morning market’. Located at Kea Farm, is one of most popular shopping destinations in Cameron Highlands, located 3km after Brinchang town. While mostly an agricultural district, the center of activity lies in a day market next to the main road, just before Equatorial Resort. Every morning till evening, traders and farmers sell their crops here to visitors and locals alike. Flowers, ornamental plants, souvenirs and handicrafts are other products sold in the market besides fruits and vegetables. On holiday weekends and national festivals, the road that leads past Kea Farm Market may be cluttered with cars parked (or parking) along the sides, causing a massive jam that stretches all the way to town.

You can see shoppers crowding this place, getting goods with the best price.

assorted fresh vegetables sold here. Some are hardly seen in KL.

However Mummy claimed that the Cauliflowers are quite expensive.

These vege looks so fresh and nice too…

Have you seen these in KL? Preserved Guava with Apple flavor. Price are depending on size too..For the size above, each pack is priced at RM8. 2 packs for RM15.

Flowers here are sold at cheap price. Roses here are sold at only RM10/ bouquet. (approximately 10 stalks-bear with the torn..because its still intact with the stem)

Fresh corns are priced depending on the size.

How about grilled corn. A lil char on the outer part, yet the juiciness & crunchiness is still there. However I think I much prefer the steam version. RM3 for a corn, I would say its not cheap.

Varieties of Strawberry souvenirs.

Mummy was so happy seeing all the fresh vegetables..She made huge purchase of vegetables. Big and small bags with happy face.

1 Nite Stay At Strawberry Park Resort, Cameron Highlands

Started our journey from Seremban and exit through Simpang Pulai toll then drove approximately another 1 hour only to reach the resort which is located at a 7-acre hill between Tanah Rata and Brinchang, Cameron Highlands. The entire journey was quite long. Moreover due to the heavy rain which slow us down.

Utilizing the coupon I bought earlier, I decided to bring my family there for a short holiday.

Bought 2 coupons at a good price of RM230 each for 2D1N Stay in a Studio Suite + Breakfast at Jim Thompson Terrace. Recently the resort has undergone refurbishment, with the modern concept rooms.  Now it looks so much fresher.

A small waterfall as you entered the resort.

At the Lobby – Minus the late lunch we had…only able to reach the resort at around 5pm to do our check ins. Quite late huh…

Our rooms are located at this block. I like the environment here…the place is rather quite compared to those located along the busy and noisy street. Moreover getting in to Brinchang town is just within 10 minutes drive.

The impression of Studio Suite. Studio Suite measures 8.50 meters x 5.25 meters with  floor areas of  44.6 square meters or 480 square feet with a balcony. I like the spacious and cosy room. Unfortunately when I asked for double bed(1 big bed), the reception told me; “Our Studio Suite are all 2 single beds”….Alrite..fine then…not really convincing. Don’t want to argue more, well I just go with it….

LCD TV with in house movies.

Private balcony with chairs, nice place for Alex and I to have a cuppa while enjoying the cool breeze air.

Complimentary Mineral Water & Coffee and Tea Making Facilities.

The very spacious bathroom. Though the bathroom is huge..but the shower area is rather narrow (behind the wash basin/mirror wall).

complimentary toiletries

Strawberry is widely plant here in Cameron Highlands. And its cheaper too. So, why not have a full cup of strawberries before getting into bed. *Bliss….

My Part Time Model…..

I got my age 2.5 years old niece as my part time model. I must say that I made her got used to pose naturally in front of the camera. And now whenever she sees I held my camera, she will insist me to take a photo of her. Nevertheless, she is a quick learner. She picks up pretty fast. Simple instructions like; look more to the left or to the right, she can grasp that easily. Or I’ll just show her how you should pose, then she really did able to follow accordingly. Well, obviously practice makes perfect.

My sis is a fulltime housewife taking care of my niece and giving her fullest attention most of the time. I’m so proud of my sis. 2 weeks ago, when my sis and BIL went for an overseas vacation for a week, my niece was left with us (under the care of my mom). I was the one who was so worry that my niece may not be able to cope or misses her mom (my sis) very very much. To my surprise, she only cried awhile on 1st night. The following days, not only she did not look for her mummy…but she was playing her toys, doing coloring by herself, watch tv (with us lied to her that mummy has gone to work/office…duhh…wonder she knows what is ‘office’) without being cranky as well. At that moment…I felt that she’s so grown up and I’m so proud of her. Hence, my sis did make some phone calls back to talk to her. Listening to her ‘everyday also same conversation’ was funny though. (mummy…today I went buy jelly ohh…I go where and where..afterwards you buy chocolate ahhh…)

My beloved niece, Vernice

My first swimsuit photo shoot.

Can play with water…very fun and she likes it very much.

I so want to LOL each time I look back to this photo.

A recent photo taken at the playground…Vernice loves to spend her evening here….

She likes the slide very much. Will often tell her mummy; “don’t say last one ahhh”…..

And this is the latest photo…where I request to put her hand on the face with a slight head tilting.

Merry Christmas with Preloaded Starbucks Card

Starbucks Malaysia has launched its latest Preloaded Starbucks Card on Tuesday (8th November 2011). I managed to purchase one yesterday from Starbucks Seremban. I was quite excited that I manage to purchase them easily. –heard that many outlets ran out of stock. With 2 designs for me to choose. Oh ya..both of the card designs are of Christmas! An early Christmas I suppose.

What is Starbucks preloaded card? Starbucks Card is a stored value card that offers you greater convenience when you make your purchase at any Starbucks store in Malaysia. With the ease of one quick swipe, you can use it to purchase anything from your favorite beverage to whole bean coffee or the latest range of tumblers !

What are the reward/benefits? (copied from else where)

* every 10th purchase of handcrafted beverage, u’ll get a grande bev for free..
* every 15th purchase of any size of the handcrafted bev, u’ll get the 2012 planner..
* during ur bday mth, purchase any bev n u’ll get a slice of cake for free
* purchase any size tumbler, u’ll get a grande size handcrafted bev for free..

In conjunction to Christmas, there were 2 new flavors. Heard many good reviews on Toffee Nut. Will be trying that soon.

Despite the new flavors…there are also nice nice Christmas gifts.

Hmm…picking my desired tumbler…..but all of them looks so nice…even the mugs are looking good. *tsk* tough choice…

I chose a snowman design. Got the preloaded card at RM20 (with RM20 credit in the card). Hence this card will works like a debit card. You may top up any amount (minimum RM10RM20) at any Starbucks outlet. On top of that, register your card through the website, to get a free beverage. So, basically the card is consider free lor…

Here I tried the Cranberry White Chocolate Mocha. Its very rich..but I feel that the cranberry is too little…

**latest update dated 14 November 2011**

Purchased a slice of Red Velveteen at price RM9.90/ slice. (Classic Red Velvet Cake reinvented with an Asian twist of Red Yeast & Goji Berries). Unfortunately the slice of cake not only very small piece…yet the taste was just average and not moist enough.

Top up RM100 to my card and got myself a free card caddy. To hold my card. There were 3 colors (black, beige & red). Since its more like a Christmas thing, therefore I chose RED! 🙂

Dinner @ Sakae Sushi, Fahrenheit88 KL

Sakae Sushi, the well established Japanese cuisine exists over countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippine, China and Vietnam. Sakae Sushi provides wide range of Japanese food with an affordable price. Guess, Sakae Sushi is not any stranger to my dear readers here.

Why is it named ‘Sakae’ sushi?

‘Sakae’, pronounced as ‘Sa – ka – ae”, the word “Sakae” means growth in Japanese.  It is also chosen as it sounds like ‘Sake’, the traditional Japanese wine well loved by many in the world.

A cup of green tea with a teabag for RM2. Its refillable with just adding on hot water.

Sushi on conveyor belt are price from RM1.90 to  RM5.90(for premium red plates). The environment here is quite good, clean and not messy. Suitable to dine with friends and also family.

Browsing the menu and also place your orders through this touch screen interactive menu is so hi-tech. This flat screen monitor is placed on every tables. It enables to speed up the ordering progress. With just a single tab, I’m able to make and add orders anytime. And my orders will straight sent to the kitchen through system without making errors. An easy and fun way.  Yeap, the above pic, Vernice was making her ‘ice cream’ order.

Pink Plate sushi priced at RM3.99

Kani Mayo – RM1.99

Sashimi Mori Zen – RM49.90 – scallop, sweet shrimp, tuna, yellowtail, octopus, salmon roe and salmon sashimi. The fish slices were just average However I like the salmon roe, it was big and has the “pop” effect. Unfortunately the prawns weren’t that fresh.

Soft Shell Crab Tempura – RM 13.90. The lightly battered soft shell crab were crispy yet not too oily.

Spicy Hotate Kimuchi Soup – RM16.90, definitely a good choice of spicy soup. Delicious kimchi soup filled with juicy scallops was so appetizing.

Kimuchi Tofu – RM5.90,  too bad that the sauce was quite salty

Ikura Chawanmushi – RM5.99

smooth silky steamed egg topped with crunchy salmon roe.

Unagi Kabayaki – RM22.90, just an ordinary unagi with teriyaki sauce.

Chicken Teriyaki Don – RM 10.90

Tasty chicken teriyaki chicken which Vernice claimed it was ‘good’.

Curry Udon – RM10.90

Katsuno Udon – RM10.90

Teriyaki Chicken Ramen – RM12.90. The noodle portion was quite big and the merky soup has nice fragrant of fried garlic, but I find it a lil bland. While the ramen was springy and perfectly cooked.

Peach Jelly – RM3.90

Chokoreto Parfait – RM12.90, rich milk flavor ice cream with layers of chocolate sauce, peanuts and also cornflakes. I quite like it….

Food : 6.5/10

Ambiance : 7/10

Supper @ Bumbu Bali, Bandar Puteri Puchong

Alex & I had our dinner much early that day. By 9pm, we started to feel a lil hungry. “Little” ya…. hahaha.. After visiting Puchong Avenue, Alex decided to go rounding at Bandar Puteri Puchong and he asked me to choose a makan place. Hmm…shabu shabu? NO..thats too heavy! Crabs le? There got cheap cheap crab le… NO Crabs at this hour la…. Taiwan food le? Received only echo…. means not an option lo… you decide la….

Bumbu Bali is the corner lot of a multiple story building, successfully attracts our attention. We’ve not been to Bali, but dining in a Bali theme restaurant sounds good to me – pun jadi jugak la… I’ve watched Bali food from TV. Somehow this was the first time of me experiencing the real food. Looking at the food prices stated on the menu may be abit pricey. But a satisfaction from the after meal, hmm…consider worth!

The dim & warm lighting made me feel quite ‘warm’ too.   =_=

hmm…this place do attracts quite a number of crowd too.

Dining in a Balinese ambiance…

Stairway to first floor. Using Balinese umbrella is quite creative!

oil-lamp in a bowl of water with some flower petals, looked romantic huh..

Looking through the extensive menu from assorted drinks and food, everything seems to look delicious. Made me had some hard time to make a choice.

Alex ordered Barley Lime – RM5. A refreshing drink which has a good taste of barley and lime. Unlike some places serving dilute barley.

Then, I chose something interesting. Cucumber & Passion Mojito – RM13. It was a superb drink. I personally likes it very much. I like the crunchiness that I’m getting from the cucumber on every sip of drink. Ya..of course its refreshing too.

We chose something light, Bali Trio – RM42. A big appetizing platter combo  filled with deep fried calamari, chicken wings and sate lilit. Served with 3 different types of sauce: tartar, chili+lemon grass+spring onions+oil, spicy sambal. — a perfect order!

Sate Lilit is commonly known as minced seafood satay wrapped around a cleaned lemon grass (serai). The grilled chicken wings were so good which left me without any complains. Chicken wings were well marinated with rich spices, a lil char skin with juicy tender meat. While for the fried calamari, the batter is so crispy and not really oily though. Both sate lilit and grilled chicken wings having rich flavors and spices which you may ignore dipping any sauce.

**A place worth trying. Will return to try more dishes and also the rice. **
