Detour to Muar Town

We were on our way to Batu Pahat to attend Guan Han & Sook Kuan’s wedding which falls on the following day. While making our road journey to Batu Pahat, we decided to make a detour to Muar town. A distance of about 50km from Batu Pahat. So, to Muar for what?? When someone mentioned about Muar, one will quickly relate it to ‘Muar Otak-Otak’. That’s why want to go try lor…. Since it was a last minute thingy, therefore wasn’t any homework done before hand. We went round round, merry go round in Eric’s proud Perodua Myvi, hunting for Otak-Otak. More like driving aimlessly.

Enough of merry go round. We decided to get our car parked and walk!

The ‘heart’ of Muar Town. The Clock Tower cum huge roundabout.

We parked our car near the clock tower. Then we walked across 2 streets and reached a busy street. Walked further…… I happily telling Alex & Eric; “Wey….there got many food leh”!! Am so delighted…it was like a hidden gem to us.

Jalan Haji Abu Hawker Centre.

Apparently this is a famous street in Muar. (wow…glad we found it). “Jalan Haji Abu”, known as “T’am Cjia Kueh” 贪呷街 in Hokkien [which literally means “the gluttoning eating street”

Beautiful & Colorful heritage building. Well preserved.

Was built since 1952?? Wow…before Merdeka and its now 59 years old.

It was a sunny day. The weather was extremely hot too. Therefore the guys decided to have ‘liong cha’ (cooling drinks).

Apparently ‘liong cha’ uncle said, this stall selling nice otak otak. (a stall just next to a stall selling ‘lo han kuo’ drinks). Uhhh…uncle has saved us!

**worry not, this street do sells frozen otak-otak. You can get a pack home and heat it up yourself. Either steam or bake it. So convenient rite? And also nice to give as souvenir** ^^

The otak otak is grill upon order. So, we decided to try the fish & prawn otak-otak. Otak-otak is made by mixing fish paste (usually mackerel) with a mixture of spices including chillies, garlic, shallots, turmeric, lemon grass and coconut milk. The mixture is then wrapped in a banana leaf that has been softened by steaming, then grilled or steamed. While fish otak-otak is most common, otak-otak is also commonly made with prawns, often resulting in a more textured variety.

pan-fried kuih… top 2 are nice..but bottom 2 are not nice….

Yeah…our tea break!

Check out the color of otak-otak that we’ve bought. Glossy orange, rich fish flavor. Texture wasn’t too mushy. Not overdone or dry either. I preferred fish over prawn.

Thumbs up from Alex, while Eric was too busy handling the otak-otak. Hehe…

A teaser photo of me having otak-otak. Sorry it may look gross…..

‘Pisang Goreng’ & ‘Ubi Kayu Goreng’ were so good. Till Alex misses it so much.

A glass of icy cold ‘calamansi juice’ was perfect under the hot & sunny noon. Very refreshing and gives you the boost! Because its quite sour! Haha…

“Õ chien” (Fried Oyster Omelette) 蚝煎 – quite bland…not nice

Fried Carrot Cake – not enough of seasonings…not nice oso

Pork Satay

Intestine Satay & Cockle Satay, which I find it quite special.

Okie…upload a ‘yeng cai’ photo of Alex to end this post. Ahem ahem…..

Mini Crab Fork

Mini Crab Fork….

What is that? Its a lil small utensil that you use when you are having a crab feast.

How it works? This mini crab fork is pretty interesting and handy. The size is specially designed for extracting flesh from a crab or lobster .

Where to buy? You can get a pair(2x) of this mini crab for RM5 at DAISO

With this crab fork, it will be easier to extract the flesh especially on edges of the claw. (which hardly reach by fingers)

there you go…the tough part.. narrow edge.

A short, sharp and narrow two-pronged fork designed to easily extract meat when consuming cooked crab.

Yummy Food I Had in Sarikei

Earlier I shared some photos on Sarikei, Sarawak. Now I would like to share some yummy food I had there. Never miss a chance to savor the local cuisine. Some West Malaysians may find that the food here do not suit their taste bud. But to me, I find it no problem at all. Hence I enjoyed tasting different types of food from different places. Apart from admiring scenery, best part about traveling is on FOOD!

Sarikei is popular for “Kam Pua noodles” (干拌面). There are 2 version. It can be either white or black. Black means addition of black soy sauce. The black version is commonly seen in Sarikei. You may say it looks like wantan mee. However the taste is different. Major ingredients are fried onions, shallots, lard, and red yeast wine that make it so unique. (Kampua from Full Tien Cafe, Jln Masjid Lama)

Kolok Mee; another noodle which I never fail to have one. Love visiting the same eatery for this kolok mee. You may be wondering what is the difference between the above 2 noodles. A blogger once explained to me that; “Kam pua noodles are also thicker and less curly than kolo mee. Kam pua’s ingredients are quite standard but kolo mee’s toppings varies from stall to stall.” (Kolok Mee from New Elfa, Bank Road)

Dabai Fruit, is a seasonal fruit. I’ve never seen it here in West Malaysia. The Sarawakian likes it very much. Unfortunately not really my liking.

Look here for more info:- DABAI FRUIT

Wild fern called “Midin” can easily get it here. It is grow wild in swamps or forests. Each bunch are price at from RM1-2. Its crunchy and best cooking method would be stir fry with belacan & dried shrimp or a simpler method with just chopped garlic and ginger with drench of red rice wine. I was told that it turn black pretty fast. Best consume on the same day after purchase. However I managed to bring a few bunch back here to KL.

Know more about Midin HERE

Stir Fried Midin with Red Rice Wine – my favorite!

“Bien Nuik”(扁肉): The local version of the “wan tan” or dumpling stuffed with minced meat. (from Chin San Cafe, Jalan Masjib Lama)

Fried Kuey Teow with Tomato. Similar to “Wat Tan Hor” but taste slightly different.

Mee Goreng with Beef (from Aik Seng Cafe, Wharf Road)

Pig’s Liver Soup. Best accompanied with a bowl of noodle. The pig’s liver were not overcooked. Therefore it has a nice texture. (from Full Tien Cafe, Jln Masjid Lama)

“Zhou Cai Hung Ngan” (糟菜粉干): Preserved mustard cooked with rice noodles soup.

Sarawak Laksa. Usually uses rice vermicelli noodle. It has a base of  Sambal belacan, sour tamarind, garlic, galangal, lemon grass and coconut milk, topped with omelette strips, chicken strips, prawns, fresh coriander and local lime. Ingredients such as bean sprouts, (sliced) fried tofu or other seafood are sometimes added.(from Aik Seng Cafe, Wharf Road)

Sarawak Laksa (from another shop) – (near JPJ)

Roti Kahwin. A charcoal grilled bun sandwiched with creamy peanut butter, a slice of butter & spread of fragrant coconut jam(kaya). (from Aik Seng, Wharf Road)

Stir Fried Rice Cakes with minced pork and leek (from Lucky Restaurant, Jalan Nyelong, opposite Nyelong River market)

“Tian Miang Ngu”(鼎边糊): The rice slices soup, cooks cooked around the rim of the wok. Added with mu er (black fungus), minced pork balls and cuttlefish (octopus)slices. Best served with pepper, similar as Taiwan’s 鼎邊銼. The soup stock is made using pork bones and dried squid.(kinda look like min fun kou) – (near JPJ)

Prawn Mee (from Peking Restaurant, Jakar Town). Priced at RM20/bowl. A very expensive prawn mee. However it was very delicious. Using yellow egg noodle, with tasty and fres big head prawn makes a superb soup.

Famous Rojak from Bintangor.

Last but not least, Mother in Law’s yummy Red Rice Wine Mee Suah. Mee Suah or they called as longevity noodle(due to the long strand), commonly eaten here during auspicious day. Example; Chinese New Year, Wedding, Birthday. Its usually practiced by Hokkiens and Fuzhounese.

Buffet Dinner @ Eyuzu Japanese Cuisine, Eastin Hotel

“Dear reader, so sorry that this blog went hibernate for a week. Because the author was busy chasing dateline.”

I visited Eyuzu Japanese Cuisine, Eastin Hotel two weeks ago.

Last 2 months, I managed to grab this good deal from Everyday. It attracts 5000 buyers with the value price of RM46/ person. Applicable for dinner from Friday – Sunday.

Thought it would be a great opportunity to use it during ma birthday.

Though the dinner begins at 6.30pm, I was rather surprised seeing a large number of diners queuing at the entrance of Eyuzu (located at first floor). What’s more surprising was that everyone was holding a printed copy of their coupon! Wonder do Eyuzu still serve quality food though knowing the fact that everyone came with coupons.

Eyuzu Japanese Cuisine

Taking after the name of Japan’s rare and expensive fruit of mysterious provenance – /yuzu – /Eyuzu at the Eastin Hotel represents authenticity and exquisiteness. Recently awarded “*Best Asian Cuisines Restaurant*” and “*Best Asian Cuisine Chef*” by the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards 2005/2006, you will find haute cuisine such as sizzling teppanyaki, sukiyaki, crispy tender tempura and sumptuous sashimi.

My favorite corner. Of sushi & sashimi. They served varieties of fresh handmade sushi & fresh sashimi which I couldn’t resist. Oh ya, they replenish the sashimi pretty quick. So, don’t need to pile up your food till others can’t get their share lor..hehhe…

WOW…check out the fresh sashimi!! Each slice are equally thick. I was told that they served Grade A sashimi. SLURRRPPP….wanting more!

Enjoyed each and every piece of it.

Wide range of Sushi

Wide range of sushi

The prawns were very fresh too

Cold Crabs

Japanese Potato Salad

Cold Tofu

All were place in a small bowl. Look so pleasant and handy!

The crunchy Edamame

Crispy Seaweed, Salmon Skin, Prawn & Crabstick

Unagi was good. Unfortunately the chicken cutlet were quite lousy. Very bland….

Chicken Skewer – not nice. meat too dry.

Teppanyaki Section. Pick your choice of meat and get them to cook for you.

Baked Oyster

Chawan Mushi was awesome. Silky smooth egg with condiments beneath.

Shark Fin Soup – couldn’t find any shark fin though.

Customize your own udon or soba with some condiments. Delicious!

Yeahh…dessert time!

Types of cakes. But they were just average.

Japanese Pancakes were made fresh on the spot. I added honey and chocolate sauce on it. They were small, not too thick and very fluffy. NICE!

Mochi with fillings. (peanut, black sesame, red bean). They are my favorite.

How about some Hot Mochi? They are glutinous ball with fillings boiled in warm water then coated with peanuts. So, its served warm. Unfortunately I think its overcooked. So, it was kinda mushy.

Strawberry & Green Tea Ice Cream

The very laku slices of Melon. The natural sweetness and fragrant which tells me to return for more.

Though there were some not so nice dishes, but with that superb Sashimi I had…I will be happy enough!

Dinner @ Home Made Fish Head Noodle, Midvalley

Together with Alex, we were roaming around in Midvalley Megamall deciding what to have for dinner. While Mummy, Bro and Sis were still in their shopping spree. Wanting to have a meal at food court where one can choose from varieties of food there. Unfortunately, the food court was so crowded. Therefore we dropped the idea of dinnering there.

Then we discovered this restaurant located the same row as Chili’s and just next to Maybank. Thought it was a good choice though since I wanted to eat something soupy.

Fish Head Noodle is the signature dish. Nevertheless they do serve other food too. ie; rice, porridge, fried noodle. But mostly are with fish.

Articles from newspaper printed on the menu.

Honey Lemon Tea

Try opting for less sweet.

Amra Plum – RM3.80 (recommended)

Amra juice together with plum was refreshing. Not too sour or sweet.

Lemon + Lychee + Plum – RM5.50 (recommended)

Deep Fried Fish Head Mee Hoon – RM9.80 (recommended) -with milk

Having a bowl of hot noodle in an air conditioned room was great. I will not be sweating all over. hahaha…. This bowl of noodle filled with rich flavor broth, tomato, salted vegetables and not forgetting the fried fish fillets and also served with thick vermicelli (mee hoon). The fish was crispy outside and meat wasn’t fishy though. Moreover the serving was quite big too.

Eaten with sambal belacan (not spicy enough for me ^^)

Deep Fried Fish Head Mee Hoon with X.O Sauce – RM11.80 (recommended)

Wanting to try a different version of fish head noodle? This could be a good choice! Slight spiciness on the broth. Equally rich in flavor.

Gong Cha Bubble Tea

Yeah..finally I got the chance to try Gong Cha Bubble Tea.

Earlier I blogged about Chatime then Ochado. All 3 are different brands of bubble tea which getting most of the popularity among the young generations. That includes me. *Big Grin*

I sort of addicted to bubble tea. Each time I travel to KL, I will find chance to get a cup. That is because I can’t get a good ones in Seremban. *sigh*

Yea..believe it or not, during the Raya break I had Bubble Tea for 3 consecutive days. Wahahaha….(with pearl of cos! my favorite after all)

Alright, back to Gong Cha. Currently there’s only 2 outlets in KL. Located at The Gardens Mall & SS15 (Subang Jaya). The kiasu me visited both outlets. I felt that both outlets are located in a rather secluded area. You may unaware of it.

“Gong Cha 貢茶 is a popular bubble tea chain that was established in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 2006, and since 2009, has since swept Malaysia’s neighbouring countries – Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Macau and The Philippines – by storm. The term “gong cha” is translated as the ancient act of offering tea to royalty, such as the Emperor of China.

crowd in The Gardens Mall outlet no lesser than others too.

LCD screens to allow you to choose your order easily. I noticed they don’t have much flavors/ choices in the menu. Unlike Gong Cha in Singapore, Hong Kong & Taiwan.

They only offers 1 standard size

Gong Cha Signature Milk Winter Melon Tea – RM5.90 (recommended)

Shake well before consume. I like the perfect combination of this drink. The milk and winter melon tea were so good and smooth! You should try it. (recommended 70% sugar)

add on “White Pearl” – RM1.50

Since everyone was saying about this ‘white pearl’ in Gong Cha, I definitely getting the chance to try it here. What is the difference between the ordinary pearl?  White pearl is made from seaweed extract. Therefore the texture is more chewy. Somehow I still prefer the usual black pearl.

Enjoy Gong Cha Signature Milk Tea in 3 ways

Winter Melon Tea – RM3.90

Nothing to shout about.

Plum Green Tea – RM4.90 (recommended)

Not too sour. Nice plum flavor yet you can still taste the aromatic brewed tea.

House Special Milk Coffee – RM6.90 (recommended)

Recommended for coffee lovers. Nice aromatic coffee drink.

Roselle Tea – RM4.90

hmm…not really into it. Not used to the taste.

Oolong Tea – RM3.90 (additional RM1 for Pearl).

A refreshing tea to quench your thirst with nice aromatic oolong tea.

Basil Seeds Lemon Winter Melon Tea – RM5.90 (recommended)

Though it sounded unique but the taste and combination were good. I like it. Flavorful taste from the winter melon tea, slight sourish from the lemon bits and a lil crunchy-ness from the basil seeds. 3 in 1 combi.

Lunch @ IKEA Restaurant

Each time I visit IKEA, I noticed the crowd over this area. Knowing that its IKEA Restaurant, surely people taking their breaks or meals during their shopping there. Yet I did not have a chance to try any of the food. After seeing the place is so crowded, I decided not to enter.

Last Saturday, I made a trip down to IKEA to check out the latest price and furniture so that I could workout my price list. Hence, this round I made a stop at the Restaurant for my lunch. Why so? Hmm….told myself no matter how, this round I gotto try their food. Anyway, its a self service restaurant.

How to order your meal:-

1) Get a food trolley (advisable if you are ordering more than 1 item). Queue in line.

2) Place your food trays on the trolley.

3) Move towards the food counter, place your order. Food will be delivered on the spot.

4) Move towards the cashier to pay your food.

Swedish Meatball (5 pcs) – RM5 (recommended)

It comes with fries. Moreover there are 3 different serving size. 5 pieces, 10 pieces and 15 pieces. Well, lets get 5 pieces for a try. Beef meatballs are served with cream sauce and lingonberry jam. Together with fries they lump everything in a plate. I know it does look awful right? Unlike what you seen on the menu. So neat and clean.

Coat the meatballs with cream sauce and lingonberry jam, Oh la la. Cream sauce was tasty and a lil sourish plus sweet taste of jam makes a slight twist in flavor. A perfect combi. Moreover the meat is so dense.

Baked Salmon with potatoes & vegetables – RM14.90

Salmon was lightly baked. Not overcooked nor salty. Sauce did not taste strong. Not much flavor though. Unfortunately the potatoes were very hard. Or should I say raw?

Chicken Whole Leg with Swedish Spice & Lemon Sauce – RM9.90

The lemon sauce was not really my liking. Potatoes and carrots were raw too…as in quite raw. However I would say that the chicken meat was good. A healthy food I suppose.

**Apart from the food, we ordered soft drinks for RM1.59 each – free flow. I was also told that the Chicken Wings were good. Wanted to take away(dapao), but was not allowed. Because they do not provide any take away box…too bad. Will try it some other time.

Jelly Mooncake by Q Jelly Bakery Shop

Mooncake Festival (Mid-Autumn) is around the corner. You can easily get or find a mooncake selling in shopping malls or any bakery shop.  Even Hotels are promoting their best mooncakes. Don’t get surprise you will be spoilt for choice. The snowkin or baked mooncakes are rather common these days. How about trying some jelly mooncakes? Yea..they do have fillings like the ordinary mooncakes, but the skin is made of jelly.

Last weekend, brother in law bought a box of jelly mooncake from Q Jelly Bakery Shop.Q Jelly Bakery Shop, the house of jelly is well known for its creative and freshest jelly cakes for all occasions.

A box of 4, simply pleasant as gifts. It requires to consume within 2 days of purchase.

Colorful Jelly Mooncakes.

Q Jelly claimed that the jelly is Green Seaweed imported from Japan. Moreover all the food color dyes are approved by “The Food and Drug Administration” (FDA) in United States. So, no worries bout that.

From Left; Mango Filling, Taro Filling.

From Left; Winter Melon Filling, Sweet Corn.

All 4 flavors are nice. They aren’t too sweet either. I personally much preferred the fruit flavors. I find it more special.

Oyaki, The Loaf @ Tokyo Street, Pavilion KL

Oyaki is a Japanese-Style bun. (looks like a pan-fried bun)

It was popular during Taisho period (1912-1925). The Oyaki dough was traditionally made from using local flour and water while the filling of the Oyaki was vegetables seasoned with Miso / Soy Sauce. Oyaki can be found in most of the bazaar in Japan and outside Japan during the Japan’s Festival celebration.

The Loaf has modified the traditional Oyaki to The Modern Taisho Oyaki by using Butter Roll Dough stuffed with more than 10 varieties of sweets and savories ingredients each to bake in oven instead of using the frying pan.

Other than Oyaki, The Loaf also offer the Japanese moist and creamy Roll Cakes such as Caramel Maple Syrup, Mixed Fruits, Green Tea, Red Bean and etc.

Located at 6th Floor of Pavilion. (at Tokyo Street)

Just a small shop. Suitable for take-away.

Today, there were more choices. Unlike during my first visit on the first weekend after it was newly launched.

There are 12 flavors shown on the menu. But not all available that day. Currently they are having this promotion of Buy 6 pcs for the price of 5!! Promotion ends on 31st August 2011. Ohh ya..the price per piece is at RM2.90.

Therefore I dapao back home to enjoy it with my family. It was nicely packed!

Above are types of Oyaki I chose and a cut section of each. The bun are quite soft. But I reheat them before consuming. I prefer it to be warm…as it will be nicer that way.

Sausage Cheese – Melted cheese on top with sausage filling. (good)

Chicken Mushroom – This is a deep fried type I suppose. Seeing the outer part coated with breadcrumbs (if I’m not mistaken). Filled with bite size mushrooms and cream. (good)

Bolognaise – Taste like the bolognaise spaghetti (good)

German Potato – Mashed potato filling with taste of peppercorns (not nice)

Chocolate Banana – Filled with taste of chocolate & banana. (good)

Kaya – Filled with kaya (coconut jam) (normal)

Last but not least. Before leaving, I got myself this lil rabbit from Zakka, Tokyo Street. Her name is FiFi…she’s quite shy…She sleeps with me every night.  Hb is getting jealous. He claimed that my bed is filled with soft toys. Soon, its going to be fully occupied by them. Wanyi, if you are reading here, this is your favorite bitbit!

Dinner @ Kampung Lobak Thai Seafood & BBQ, Seremban

I seldom travel downtown because I can get almost everything in Seremban 2 (another part of Seremban). There’s one night as Alex and I decided to head to Seremban town. We passed by this Kampung style restaurant located kinda off-sight, slightly below the road with many diners. Somehow, we did not have any thoughts to make a stop there. Until one day I saw a friend of mine posted the dish on his Facebook, saying “good Thai Food here”. All this while I thought its  just an ordinary Malay restaurant serving Malay food (nasi goreng kampung, mee goreng, nasi paprik, mee bandung). One day, I told my colleague about this place. She went and returned the next day showing me a “thumb up”.

WOW….seems like I mustn’t miss this place. Moreover I love spicy food, especially Tom Yam, my favorite!!.

The Kampung Style Restaurant serving Thai Food. Good ventilation.

I noticed most of the diners are Chinese. Worry not…this is a HALAL restaurant.

Though it was crowded, but the food served were pretty quick!

Dun play play….got WiFi summore….

As I was busy shooting…my cheeky niece insisted me to take a photograph of her too… *her signature post*

Fresh Botak Coconut – RM5/ each

BBQ Cockles – RM8 (recommended)

The clams are fresh and not overdo. Lightly dip the bbq clams in the sauce. Both sauces were good. Very spicy too….

Kangkung Belacan – RM8 (recommended)

Kangkung or Water Spinach stir-fry with belacan (shrimp paste). A must have dish in a Thai restaurant! Anyway, this was good though.

Kailan with Salted Fish – RM8

Though the kailan wasn’t overcooked, but too bad don’t have much taste of the salted fish.

Basil Leaf Thai Style Chicken – RM10

We requested this to be cooked without chili. So that Vernice can eat. And she enjoyed it. If you dislike the taste of basil leaf, don’t worry because the flavor of basil leaves did not overpowered the taste of chicken and other marination.

Steam “Kang Som” Fish (Siakap) – RM53 (recommended)

The price of this fish is kinda expensive. However lets ignore the price and enjoy the dish. The fish was fresh. While the soup is spicy and has alil sourish taste. Served under the burning charcoal (underneath the tray). You may enjoy eating the HOT & SPICY fish, including the soup till last piece. Beware, the soup/ gravy is darn spicy. I needed a fire extinguisher!!!

Seafood Tom Yam – RM16 (M) (recommended)

A pot of hot & spicy tom yam, yet not too sour filled with mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, crab, squids, prawns.

Green Curry – RM18 (L)

A literally sweet curry in Thai cuisine. Its is less spicy. What’s in the hot pot? There are eggplants, basil and chicken. Somehow I preferred the curry to be more concentrated.

Deep Fried Sotong with Garlic & Pepper – RM12 (recommended)

Deep fried squids was not bad. Not too dry or hard and they are crispy. With a light taste of garlic and pepper. Dip in the Thai chili sauce and pop into your mouth.

Pandan Chicken – RM7.50 (3 pcs) (recommended)

Boneless chicken are well marinated with seasonings and spices then wrapped with Pandan leaves before frying them. Wrapping with Pandan leaves able to enhance a sweet aroma towards the chicken.

The size of meat per piece was quite big.  Moreover its tender and flavorful. Thumbs up!

Thab Thim Krob – RM3.50

Its a popular Thai dessert. Those red rubies like thing are actually chestnuts coated in tapioca flour. So, you will have the effect of chewy outside and crunchy inside. Served in the form of ice-shaved coconut milk together with slices of nangka(jack fruit).
